CCCEU Response on the Rejection of Chinese Companies' Proposed Factory Investment in the UK
In response to media inquiries regarding reports that a proposed factory investment by Chinese companies in the UK was blocked on "national security" grounds, the China Chamber of Commerce in the EU (CCCEU) stated as follows:
We are highly concerned by reports that this investment project in the UK was restricted.
Chinese companies have long made positive contributions to local economic development, job creation, and the green transition in Europe, including the UK. Investment projects should be evaluated on objective criteria within a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory market environment.
While we respect legitimate national security concerns, the case in question suggests a clear political dimension in decision-making. A decision driven more by political considerations than solid evidence, and carried out with limited transparency or communication, increases uncertainty for investors and may undermine Chinese companies' long-term confidence in the European market.
The CCCEU calls on all relevant parties to uphold openness, fairness, transparency, and non-discrimination, and to provide a stable and predictable business environment for all market participants. We will continue to follow developments closely and support companies in protecting their legitimate interests through appropriate channels.
